Empowering women's voices for a sustainable future

By empowering women in the shipping industry, we are not only promoting gender equality and diversity in the workplace, but we are also tapping into a valuable resource that can contribute to the industry's growth and success. Women bring unique perspectives, skills, and experiences that can help drive innovation and improve sustainability in the shipping industry. By including more women's voices in decision-making processes, we can ensure that the industry is better governed, with a responsible approach to business and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) matters.

Empowering women in the shipping industry can help create a more prosperous future for all. By promoting gender equality and diversity, we can create a more inclusive and supportive workplace culture which attracts and retains top talent, regardless of gender. This in turn helps improve the competitiveness and profitability in the shipping industry, creating economic benefits for all stakeholders.

Finally, empowering women can also contribute to a more environmentally friendly future for shipping and the world. Women play a key role in driving innovation and promoting sustainable practices in the industry, such as reducing emissions and minimizing the environmental impact of shipping. By empowering women to express their opinions and ideas on important ESG matters, we can help to create a more sustainable and responsible shipping industry that is better equipped to meet the challenges of the future.

At KPI OceanConnect, we advocate for the importance of equality and promote numerous initiatives to attract more women to the Shipping Industry!

If I were to tell my young self in the 1980's that I am working for a global ogranisation where women are in top two management positions, my young self would not have believed me.

As an industry, we have come a long way already, and I count my blessings to be working for an organisation whose goal is to strive to be a leader in equality, diversity and inclusion.

Having worked in the same company for 25 years, I am inspired by how much the business continues to improve. KPI OceanConnect keeps renewing itself on so many fronts. This includes its flexible working policies, which enables me to work from home three days a week to support my family and spend as much time as possible with my children.

As an innovative, caring organisation, KPI OceanConnect has always promoted flexibility and encouraged a good work-life balance for employees, which is reinforced through our parental leave policy. All employees, regardless of gender, are offered 20 weeks paid parental leave at all our global offices. It's great to know that everyone is given equal access to parental leave and encouraged to take this special time with family.

I believe this policy will make it easier for our women all over the world to enjoy parental leave without feeling at a disadvantage to male colleagues and that male team members will appreciate the opportunity to take a more active role in family life than has traditionally been the case.

With the changing dynamics of the marketplace, the green transition and shifting social expectations, adaptability and innovation are key requirements needed in today's workplace. This creates great opportunities for more diverse teams and new approaches to business.

Ensuring an equitable playing field for all employees is a key pillar in KPI OceanConnect's strategy. We have diverse perspectives among the workforce, combined with an inclusive culture and agility.

We will see more women joining us at KPI OceanConnect for our array of roles on offer, including the trading and broking floor. We are offering new two-year trainee programme called Get Fuelled for young professionals who would like to embark on a career in marine fuels trading and look forward to welcoming even more diversity to our global organisation.

We are always finding ways to be more environmentally friendly.

In Hong Kong, we are introducing our customers to alternative, cleaner fuels such as LNG and biofuels, which will be valuable pathways in the next three-to-five years as transitionary fuels.

In Asia, we are seeing an increasing number of biofuel bunkers and a willingness from owners to pay the premium for the fuel to test and trial, because it is the most convenient fuel with its drop-in characteristics.

We play an important role in advising our partners and customers on how they can start to reach real milestones in reducing CO2 emissions. As a global company, I believe we can combine our efforts to reach our decarbonisation targets.

Shipping is a sector that commonly comes under intense scrutiny and attitudes towards good governance have changed dramatically and will continue to change. As a global organisation, we pride ourselves on our responsible and transparent approach to doing business, where trusted partnerships are a key component of our organisations, and our customers', sustainability.

The next step for the entire maritime value chain when it comes to driving forward ESG is to set targets on each pillar and ensure an appropriate level of focus on each. By publicly monitoring and measuring these targets, this will allow for true accountability and for others to track performance. Further enhancing ESG reporting will create greater opportunities for our industry and the people working in it.

Since I began working in marine fuels more than a decade ago, the market has become far more complex. We're experiencing increased volatility, high fuel prices, greater regulation, transactional challenges, and constrained credit at the same time as trying to transition to cleaner fuels.

In this market dynamic, it's really important to be transparent to build trust with our partners. Forensic due diligence should be commonplace to understand the financial strength of business partners and to enable comprehensive assessment of risks.

At KPI OceanConnect, we have strict compliance and counterparty risk assessments to ensure we do business in the right way and with the right partners.

As decarbonisation is high on the shipping industry's agenda, we provide extensive guidance on when and where alternative fuels will be available. We see particular interest in which global ports are supplying biofuels, because they offer an immediate way to reduce vessel emissions.

As with all my colleagues across the globe, I've received wide ranging training about all aspects of future fuels, including ammonia, methanol and hydrogen, so that I can guide my clients through the upcoming market changes. It's been a great way to develop my skills.

My background is in finance, so shipping wasn't the first industry that came to mind when looking for a new role. However, KPI OceanConnect attracted me because the unique nature of the organisational culture and the fast pace of the shipping and marine fuels industries. I really enjoy being on the trading floor in the middle of the action and hustle of it all.

Where 'on-the-job' experience didn't quite cut it, KPI OceanConnect has supported my professional development. They sponsored my CIMA accounting qualification, and provided the flexibility I needed to balance work, life and study to progress my career within the organisation. The support from my colleagues and mentor also helped me to achieve one of the highest grades globally, and this is something I am extremely proud of.

From day one, everyone at KPI OceanConnect encouraged and supported my professional and personal development, and a clear career path is always in place to help me progress further. Both traders and managers are always willing to share knowledge and information, and this rare willingness to help is incredibly valuable.

At KPI OceanConnect, the flat organisational structure allows easy access to senior management due to fewer hierarchical layers. This structure improves decision-making, creativity, adaptability and innovation in the team. It builds employee autonomy, responsibility, and motivation to create a more productive and satisfied workforce.

We are all encouraged and able to interact with the CEO and Managing Directors, which I think this is rare in the trading and shipping industries. The open-door policy at KPI OceanConnect has really helped learn, develop and progress in the business.

When I first joined the industry, I felt like I stood out as one of the only females among many men on the trading floor. KPI OceanConnect has brought many more women into both the accounts and finance team and onto the trading floor. I love the diversity which today makes our global team around 40% female - a figure KPI OceanConnect continually strives to improve.

Historically, trader roles have been dominated by men, and the industry has often struggled to maintain a balanced culture between trading and supporting roles However, at KPI OceanConnect we have created an inclusive and diverse business that encourages a culture of equality, empowering and inspiring more diversity across all teams.

Sustainability in shipping is crucial. As a marine energy provider, I sense our organisation's resoluteness to engage for a clearer picture on clean energy. Our role is to facilitate the transition to low-carbon fuels and to help clients and stakeholders fulfil their environmental criteria. It sets a good tone for KPI OceanConnect to be taking the first steps; looking at new fuels, using our relationships with clients to support their transition to cleaner sources of energy. Doing this is good for our reputation, and good for the future for employees, customers, suppliers. We're not just trading for short term profitability; we're trading for a longer-term future. We are committed to stepping forward and leading the way. We want to do everything we can to facilitate the transition to low-carbon fuels.

I really enjoy participating in our 50 for 50 campaigns. They don't just raise funds for good causes, they also let team members choose which organisations they want to support in their local area. In London we were able to support Accuro - Supporting People With A Disability in the latest campaign.

Providing local teams with the opportunity to give back to the communities they are a part of is important. It is great that the business wants to maintain a connection to my local community. If we want to have a positive impact, we can start with our own communities.

As a trader, governance safeguards us from penalties, sanctions, or fines. And I think it underlines our ability to do good things in other areas of sustainability.

Being transparent and demonstrating the company is running as it should create confidence and trust at the banks and investors that back us, and means we can continue to do more good things. The focus is there, and we are heading in the right direction to achieve our governance goals.

I think people should care about who they work for, because who they work for reflects on them. Good governance doesn't just support a strong financial and reputational underpinning of the business but also supports employee development and satisfaction by providing a culture of security, fairness and responsibility.

Being transparent and accountable creates confidence and trust with our business partners and ultimately means we can continue to do more good things. Everywhere you look in our offices there are people who've been with KPI OceanConnect for a decade or much more. Retaining top talent and having satisfied and engaged people, shows the business is doing something right.

As a part of the own emission and waste program in KPI OceanConnect, the Rotterdam office has taken their responsibility to reduce the plastic wastage very seriously. In the past, we found that we were throwing away around 240 empty water bottles. Even though these were getting recycled, we knew there was a way to make sure we had to reduce this amount tremendously. We now don't use any plastic bottles and instead have our own KPI OceanConnect-branded reusable bottles from a sustainable brand called Dopper for all our team to enjoy. Dopper was founded in 2010 in The Netherlands to reduce the plastic soup in the oceans with the idea of creating a bottle that you can be re-used. With its unique three-part design, the bottle is easy to keep clean and durable – plus it's a bottle and cup in one!

Diversity and inclusivity matter in a professional setting, KPI OceanConnect is serious about defining accurate and fair policies, which I value and appreciate.

In our office, we chose to support WISTA Turkey through our 50for50 campaign. It helps female students who want to embark on a career in maritime schools, which fully aligns with our values and our Women in Shipping initiative.

As a market leader, we are employing people in a fair environment, making valuable donations and working in accordance with all applicable rules. I am very proud to work for a company like KPI OceanConnect, which values these good causes.

I have always felt the company's support and care throughout my time working here. Our office in Istanbul, Turkey recently welcomed new women to our trading floor, taking our ratio to 44 men and 56 women. This is a great reflection of our company's stance to offer an attractive, diverse and inclusive environment to for women to work in shipping. I believe our new colleagues are very talented and will soon be very experienced traders in the market in the near future.

I like working at a company that provides equal chances for women to compete and learn. I like being part of this team and it encourages me to strive for excellence while balancing work and family life. Another interesting area of KPI OceanConnect is how we leverage digital technology into the trading business. In Singapore, we recently completed the first overseas digital marine fuels deal using the SGTraDex platform, which enhances transparency and saves time. This innovative transaction for our customer Pacific International Lines demonstrates our long-term focus on digitalisation.

I believe we all have a personal responsibility towards helping the environment. Every day we are buying, using and disposing of consumer products, creating waste and releasing CO2 emissions into our atmosphere. I now review my use of energy, such as air conditioning, lighting and paper, and finds ways to improve energy efficiency and conservation to establish a greener working environment for myself, colleagues and the planet.

I first joined KPI OceanConnect as a maternity cover in the trade support team, and this was my first time working in the marine fuels segment. My role involved liaising between traders and the back office, assisting the team and playing a more functional role in contract and spot deals to create a smoother process. From the offset, KPI OceanConnect has always been very encouraging towards people developing their career within the company. After only six months of working with trade support, I was offered a permanent position. A year later I got the opportunity to move over to the commercial side as a key account manager. I have now begun an intense training programme, where I will benefit from the support of my entire team, including colleagues in our other offices. I am thankful to have the foundation knowledge from working in trade support, where I learnt the basics of what a trader does. I chose to work at KPI OceanConnect because it was made very clear that progression and development is encouraged. Another key feature is the high retention rates, and it's great to see that so many people stay here for the long-term and it is clear why.

Women in Shipping is highlighting the importance of diversity and gender equality in the workplace. The many benefits of having a more balanced representation of women and men in the industry are well established. Equal representation improves financial performance, better decision-making, and increased innovation.
